Taurus season arrives around the 19th of April, anchoring our souls as we strengthen our roots and take in the beauty surrounding us. This fixed earth sign is ruled by sensual and pleasure-seeking Venus, who teaches us how to harmonize with our physical reality. Taurus energy helps us build a life focused on quality over quantity. It is never in a hurry because it knows that a slow and steady pace results in a sustainable and luxurious life.

The archetype associated with Taurus is the bull, and its glyph contains a half-circle (or crescent) facing the sky, on top of a whole circle. The crescent symbolizes feminine receptivity found by resting on (or with) the Earth (represented by the circle). The association of the bull isn’t all about stubbornness. Bulls tend to charge full speed ahead into whatever they set their minds to. This means it takes time for them to adapt to new things and cannot be forced in a new direction.

Taurus teaches us about our values, our relationship to power, and how we interact with our desires. This sign carries an abundance of kundalini (life force) energy, as evidenced in its arrival during the height of the Spring season, where well-rooted plants are showing off their beautiful blooms. In its most positive expression, this archetype is full of fertile soil that is ready to accept whatever seed is planted and nurture it as it grows into something beautiful and strong.

By embodying the energy of Taurus in our physical bodies, we learn how to hold steady, engage our senses, benefit from practical choices, and harness that which is available to us in our physical world. Above all else, Taurus teaches us to slow down and enjoy the process, making it a powerful archetype for deepening your grounding practices and boosting your manifestation rituals. Below are some ideas and suggestions you can incorporate into your dance and movement practices to align with this energy...

Energetic Qualities of Taurus:

  • Earth - slow and steady motions expressed in a well-structured format
  • Yin/Lunar - receiving or pulling energy towards oneself
  • Fixed - sustains movement to preserve or finish what has already begun

Moving with the Taurus Archetype:

The Taurus archetype has a personal orientation, meaning it is concerned with its well-being and how it meets the world it finds itself in. A dancer expressing this energy might share a story about what is going on inside of them or how they are experiencing the physical world. They could also be exploring their drive for power, the acquisition of resources, or their experience of love and physical beauty.

To explore this archetype for yourself, try experimenting with descending motion and inward-traveling, sensual shapes. Explore movement that depicts digging, spreading, or molding. Try to incorporate repetitive movements performed at a mid-low level body height range. I would also encourage you to utilize some floor work or begin moving from a rooted and grounded base.
